- Muong Hoa monorail. From Sun Plaza in the middle of Sapa town, the monorail takes you down the Muong Hoa valley to the cable car station.
- Fansipan cable car. About 6.3 km in roughly 15 minutes, over rice terraces and forest. It's one of the longest single cable car runs in the world.
- Funicular or stairs to the peak. From the top station it's around 600 steps to the summit marker. The funicular covers most of that.
- The summit. Pagodas, a giant Buddha statue and the 3,143 m marker. Expect a photo queue at the marker on busy days.
Plan three to four hours from Sapa town and back.
Hours, Weather and Tips
- Hours: uphill boarding usually starts at 8:00 AM on weekdays and 7:30 AM on weekends. The last ride up is mid-afternoon and the last ride down is around 4:00 to 5:00 PM. Hours shift by day and season, so check the morning you go.
- Go early. The first couple of hours have the best chance of clear views and the shortest lines. Tour groups arrive from mid-morning.
- Check the weather. Fog is common, especially in summer. If the summit is socked in, push it to the next morning if your trip allows.
- Best months: September to November and March to April are the clearest.
- Bring layers. It's 10 to 15°C colder at the top than in Sapa town, and well below freezing in winter.
- Wear proper shoes. The stone steps get wet and slippery.
Getting to Sapa
Sapa is about five to six hours from Hanoi by road. Most people take a limousine bus or sleeper bus from the Old Quarter, or the overnight train to Lao Cai and a shuttle up the mountain. All of them are bookable on Klook, and STEPHANDPETE works on those too.
